Modal verbs of obligation / permission (must / have to / can)

Put the class into pairs. Students follow the instructions on their pair work cards. Encourage students to use the modal verbs as directed.

STUDENT A .

1 Imagine your partner is a teacher and you are a student.

Ask your partner about the school rules.

Use Can I...? / Do I have to...?

2 Now imagine you are a teacher in a very relaxed school with not many school rules.

Your partner is a student in your school. Answer his / her questions and tell your partner

about the school rules. Think about these things: uniform, exams, homework, food and

drink, running, talking…

Use have to / don't have to, must / mustn't.

STUDENT B .

1 Imagine you are a teacher in a very strict school. Your partner is a student in your school.

Answer his / her questions and tell your partner about the school rules. Think about these

things: uniform, exams, homework, food and drink, running, talking...

Use have to / don't have to, must / mustn't.

2 Now imagine your partner is the teacher and you are the student.

Ask your partner about the school rules.

Use Can I...? / Do I have to?
